central heating

My flat has no central heating, i am currently using small fan heaters but they are expensive to run and as soon as they get turned off it goes cold. I need something with a timer so my room will be warm in the morning. I also would like something a bit more economical. Should i get a convector or an oil filled radiator, or slimline panel?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

  1. Gas boiler, hot water heater, turn on and off, which is most efficient?

I live in a studio apartment by myself and only need hot water in the mornings to shower. Do i save a significant amount of gas by just turning it on in the morning, taking a shower, and turning it off? Its a bit of a hassle, but if it saves money and gas i think its worth it. Let me know, thanks for the help. i don’t mean a timer, i mean i got physically and turn on and off the heater, i live in mexico where this is common and didn’t know if it was just a old wives tale or actually true...

  2. British Gas Boiler – How to work the programmer?

Hi, I’ve moved into a place which has a gas boiler, which has a small electronic programming unit to control the system. I can’t for the life of me figure out how to program it sucessfully! Its a small panel about 5x5cm with an LCD screen, a little red slider switch with a clock symbol, Cl, Auto and Timer settings. There seem to be seven selectable times, but each time I think i’ve set it to come on at the right time, it comes on anyway as soon as i set it! There’s an On/Off Button which sets the state of the program, +/- buttons to change the times, enter button and a reset button. Does anyone have any idea how to make this work for setting times of the day I want the boiler to come on and off?...

I have used Dimplex plug in rads before and they work really well.

An oil filled radiator is probably your best option

  • Marlon Bamford says:

an oil filled rad gives out a lot of heat.

oil filled portable (just) radiators from somewhere like Argos,,,,spend up to £100 for a really good one,,they take a little time to get going but once hot the oil remains hot long after it has been switched off,,get one with a timer and away you go,,,,

Try a ceramic heater. You can put on 400w or 800w. They oscillate from side to side and are nice and warm. They costs about 4p an hour to run (so they sday). They are also cheap to buy. Usually you can get 2 for the price of one.

You can get timers that plug in to your electrical sockets and then you plug your heater into the timer.
Oil-filled heaters may keep the heat longer. There are also ceramic heaters that are more efficient.
Make quilted curtains for your windows to keep heat in at night. If it is really cold outside you may want to cover your windows with plastic taped at the edges to the window frame.
Seal drafty cracks and behind electrical outlets with a non-toxic foam..
Use an elecric blanket or heat pad at night – a hot water bottle is good too.

if ur electric fan heaters r too expensive electric convection (oil filled or not) would prob be just as expensive and heat the room less quickly. slimline panel? “as soon as they get turned off it goes cold” would indicate that U have an insuation or draft problem. U should check around doors, windows, outside walls for air infiltration (smoke pencil, cigarette). Put window film on if single pane. ” I need something with a timer so my room will be warm in the morning.” Heater w/timer or pug in timer w/rating = or greater than heatter

Central heating is definately the way forward. More expensive to install than oil filled heaters but once you’ve tried it you’ll wonder why you’ve never had it fitted before!! Your flat will be lovely and warm before you know it
