Tips to empty a gas heating system

If you want work carried through on your fully pumped gas central heating system you may want to empty the system. To fit a temperature radiator valve or replace a broken metal radiator are two cases. Your engineer will normally be performing list has although some householders do have the confidence to try this themselves.

Whilst there can be a multitude of causes the most frequent is to flush the heating radiators. Before you do anything to the actual metal radiator you should switch off the boiler and any gas or electric that supplies the heating boiler. To enable the system to completely clear you will need to ensure that no water is going into the heating system.

The gas heating system has a tank in the attic which will ensure that any water shortfall is filled up. A common ballvalve is used in the expansion tank similar to that in a toilet. Rising water levels in the water tank mean that the valve is closed as the ball floats higher on the water surface. As the water level falls, say through Draining, the ball drops in the water tank opening the valve and allowing more water to enter the gas central heating system. To fully empty the heating system this top up process will need to be stopped. To prevent any more water entering the valve needs to be off.

Once you have completed the above run a hosepipe from an outside empty to the outlet of at the bottom of one of your radiators. The gas heating system can now empty by water flowing out of the metal radiator, through the outlet valve, and into the outside clean. As there will be water in the bottom floor heating radiators you will need to attach the hose pipe to one of these to guarantee that the whole central heating system drains. You must make sure before you start cleansing or replacing your radiator that all of the water has been drained out.

To make your gas central heating system flush quicker you should vent any air valves on your heating radiators, starting with the metal radiators on the top level and working your way down. When finished work can now begin on the system.
