It is either an instant water heater (you turn on the hot tap and the boiler lights)

or

It stores hot water in a hot water cylinder (usually located in the airing cupboard)

Water from the boiler flows in coils in the hot tank
(indirect)
cold water enters at the bottom hot at the top
(direct)

add a thermostat and that's a hot water cylinder

the hot water thermostat turns the boiler on or off
the room thermostat turns the boiler on or off
the timer turns the boiler on or off

you have en-suite bedrooms and have not found an airing cupboard? in your own home or a friends home?
Hard to believe
