My boiler’s not working and we desperately need hot water – the people won’t be free till next Tuesday to fix it! Please help:
The pressure on the boiler is too high – I need to lower it. I saw that there were taps at the bottom, and turned one, only to have the pressure increase even further! I need to get the pressure down.

We recently had a combi boiler installed in our rented property. Initially the plumbers left the cold water feed from the tank in the loft so the combi boiler was only supplying the hot water. Unfortunately due to the differing pressures (i think), the cold water feed was excessive whilst using the shower the overflow pipe from the loft rained from the side of the house. The plumbers have since rectified that problem by removing the cold water tank and using the boiler to supply both the hot and cold. I’ve got a pretty new Heatline Vizo Condensing Combi Boiler. Everything was fine for the first couple of months and pressure held steady at 1.5 when cold, and rose to around 2 when the heating was on. Over the past few weeks, the water pressure drops below 0 turning the boiler off regularly. I can refill to 1.5 before going to bed, and it will be back below 0 in the morning. When I refill to 1.5 and have the heating on, the boiler pressure now rises to the maximum of 3. When the heating turns off, the pressure will drop again, eventually to below 0 within the space of maybe 8 or 9 hours. Whats going on? I cant find any obvious leaks (although the plumbing is underfloor), and there is no air in any of the rads. my combi boiler works fine at heating my water and filling radiators but every couple of weeks the pressure gauge goes down to 0 and i have to fill it up again. I can’t find leaks on the radiators ( also i live in an upstairs flat so i would have the women downstairs knocking if i did). I must admit i haven’t had the thing serviced for some time. also how much roughly does it cost to service a combi boiler?...

You need to drain off water from the radiators, use the bleed valve and a container for the water. just enough for the pressure to drop to 1 will do it. if you make it to low you can increase it again with the valve you opened by mistake.
There should be a drain valve on the boiler that leads to outside your house, open this valve to drain down the pressure but make sure to keep an eye on the level inside the boiler (on the pressure gauge). Should you go too low then just top up the pressure (using the tap you opened before) to about 1 Bar that should be plenty. Once you have got what you need from the boiler turn it back off in case there is a problem with it going over pressure. Lastly if this doesn’t fix the problem do not mess around with the inside of the boiler this can be very dangerous. Hope this helps.
Easiest way is to get a towel, place it around the bleed screw on the radiator and open it. The towel will soak up the water. There will be no need to take the bleed screw out.
look under the boiler or drop the front panel down you should see a valve marked 3bar turn this a quarter turn to reduce the pressure through the pressure relief valve or release pressure at a convenient radiator
