Icy winds of wintertime curl through the trees and you huddle at your window, thinking of heating for your house – this season perhaps you should get yourself gas central heating. There’s nothing cosier than a warm room while a blizzard rages outdoors, and this warmth is best provided by a sturdy and efficient gas central heating system.

A central heating system is basically a heating boiler with pipes carrying the heat to radiators placed in all the rooms; these systems can be of the pumped or vented type.

Popularly used are pumped systems which comprise of a main feed and expansion water tank that heats up and transmits the heat through pipework to secondary heaters (heating radiators). The tank has enough space to allow for any water expansion that might result from the heating.

The second type of heater is composed of a sealed system without a central component that is part of the heating radiator. It’s basically closed, so there is really no need for any water tanks and the space they require. A sealed gas central heating system removes the risk of water leakage, airlock formation and pipe freeze (a common problem in the harsh winters of countries like Russia).

Do I really need a gas central heating system to heat my home?.

The primary benefit of gas central heating is that the entire home or office is warmed up rapidly, and that too, without adversely affecting the air around you. In earlier times, gas, electrical or storage heaters were utilised. These primitive heaters invariably resulted in a harsh, sticky and smelly atmosphere.

With central heating systems, these problems are not encountered, but your central heating system will require regular maintenance. Most people turn off their heating systems during summertimes and switch them on only during wintertimes, this should be totally avoided as the system could suddenly develop a problem as winter appears. Instead it is advocated that you gradually bring them into use during autumn so that if you spot any problem you can quickly contact an engineer.

Furthermore, some of these systems also give admission to air and dirt; therefore emptying is a necessity, which should be done regularly with an annual service schedule. You can achieve this most effectively by putting a a bucket under the valve and opening it carefully to release the water, but you need to take extra care to prevent any additional water from entering the system.
