Vented (or pumped) and Sealed heating systems are the two most common types available.
The most commonly used systems are pumped/vented Gas Central Heating systems. A pumped/vented Gas Central Heating System includes components known as a feed and expansion tank to allow for the expansion of water as it is heated in the heating radiators. Your central heating radiators are heated and your water is stored in a hot water tank. The expansion tank has enough space to allow for the expanding of water as a result of heating. The tank is positioned at the point of maximum height, usually in the attic area to create water pressure. It serves a dual purpose by heating the house and also supplying heated water.
Most houses, especially the old ones will have a vented/pumped heating system.
A Sealed Gas Central Heating System is a relatively modern technology, and is being adopted by many homeowners today. As the name indicates, a sealed system is a an enclosed system therefore no expansion water tanks are needed. There are benefits to have this closed type of system with pipework and tanks being unnecessary.
- There is no chance of pipes freezing in the attic.
- There won’t be any repair work on the tank or pipes which will be in the attic for a pumped/vented system.
- The risk of leaks is decreased.
- The air cannot enter the system as its sealed and hence there are lesser chances of sludge, corrosion and air locks developing.
- If necessary, the system can be flushed out under pressure using the main water supply.
A sealed Central Heating System is a system with the required controls and safety equipment all contained in one. The water for the system is provided directly from the main water pipe of the house. The main water supply feeds the system immediately under pressure.
A pressure vessel containing compressed gas, which is kept separate from the sealed system by a diaphragm, is used to allow any pressure variations. A safety valve will let water to escape or fill up depending on whether the pressure becomes too high or too low respectively.
As compared to other heating systems, Gas Central Heating systems are cheaper to run. They offer you a lot more control of your home environment than the other heating systems.
