Is it possible to have both a combi boiler and a conventional boiler?

Would it be possible to have a combi boiler as your main water source and then a conventional boiler with a cylinder as a back-up water system should your combi boiler fail.

Doesn’t matter about cost I just want to know 1) is it possible and 2) what are the implications.

(this would be on new build houses).

Thanks in advance.

How do you turn up the water pressure in a combi boiler – combi boilers are often installed in sealed systems and these can loose water pressure through normal operation. As a result the home owner might need to tinker with the filling inlet and repressurise the combi boiler so that it can operate correctly.

A recent commenter said “My combi boiler’s stopped working, I know its due the water pressure being too low. I tried connecting a silver pipe to two copper pipes with black and blue valves on them, I turned on one of them hoping for a result and I got nothing apart from a drenched carpet.
Does anyone know how to get the water pressure back up again? ”

If you are in this situation its time to get our the boiler manual and look at the water pressure section. If you are not confident you should consider bringing in a… Read the rest of this ...

House is in the UK, very isolated and no chance of ever getting mains gas. I wondered if a central and water heating system run off oil or cannister gas, a log burning aga, solid fuel aga or anything not mentioned is particularly better and more economical than the other. Any advice would be helpful. I havent even considered solar or any other eco possibility~but am open minded to suggestions as long as affordable.

A question we have been asked previously relates to how to drain a combi boiler central heating system and a typical situation is “I need to replace a faulty radiator valve and although I’ve done this job a few times before i have now had a combi boiler fitted instead of the old system with the tank in the attic. so I’m unsure if i need to bleed air from the boiler as this is the highest part of the system.”

Many times householders attempt central heating system repairs and maintenance themselves. Draining and refilling central heating systems which include combi boilers are a common challenge. This is perfectly OK provided that the gas pipework and gas heating components are not being touched as any gas installation or maintenance work should be completed by a CORGI (Gas Safe) qualified plumber.

Before you attempt to drain and refill a… Read the rest of this ...

I have a Baxi Bermuda S gas boiler and just recently it has started making a rumbling noise when the gas burner is on. It sounds similar to the noise you get from a blow torch when it’s just been lit and isn’t burning smoothly. The noise happens ONLY when the burner is lit. It also doesn’t happen the whole time, it’s intermittent, happening only a couple of times each evening. Any suggestions?
Many thanks for any useful info.
Kind regards

Hi All,

I’ve been tasked by one of my aunts to arrange for her apartment in London (NW8) to be redone (its in a bit of a shabby state right now). The first thing on my list is replacing the ageing central heating/boiling system.

Before I do that, I’d like your advice on:

1) Who to contact to carry out the work (e.g. British Gas)
2) Where to get a reliable list of contractors doing it
3) How much can it ultimately cost (its a 2.5 bedroom duplex apt)
4) What heating/boiling system should I get
5) How long would it possibly take
6) What work should be carried out (e.g. a checklist)
7) Any other hidden cost/catch I should be aware of

Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone! Recently moved to the UK and have a gas boiler at home. I removed the air off the radiators a while ago and boiler stopped working.

Last time this happened my landlord came and topped up water in the tank. I can’t remember how he did that :( There are several pipes and valves underneath the boiler, but can’t find which one to turn. Tried one that looked promissing and almost flooded the place. Any ideas?

Let’s hope I won’t freeze tonight…

Here’s the problem … Our central heating pump is on its last legs (having problems pushing the water around the house). We’ve found a replacement pump at www.plumbworld.co.uk/348-195 but the controls are on the left side, which gives us a problem because they need to be on the right-side to allow the boiler lid to be put back on again (otherwise they’d stick out too far). Darling hubby thinks I’m mad to ask this question but – if we bought this pump, could it be installed up-side-down (so that the controls were on the right hand side). Doing this would allow the boiler lid to be put back on but would also mean that the water entering the pump would do so where it would have exited, and vice-versa (e.g. in flow becomes the outflow; out-flow becomes the in flow). Hubby thinks I’ll blow us :)

I have an old gas boiler that runs just fine. I have gotten two different ideas on what to do. One person told me to wait till it fails then replace it. The other said replace it now and save on the heating costs. Any ideas?

Gas boiler replacement costs are a major concern for home owners, a gas boiler is an essential part of a central heating system, it is also the most expensive. You also need to add the installation costs to this, trained boiler installers are not cheap if you want a professional job completed and a trouble free installation that will last for many years.

A typical enquiry is: I have a 1800 square feet home (including basement) and 2 thermostats. I need a new replacement gas boiler. What can I expect as a range of cost to have a contractor remove and replace it with a new one?

When looking at a replacement gas boiler and the cost of its replacement you need to take into account the total costs of the boiler over its lifetime. Do not overlook this as the costs of gas consumed over 15 years will easily exceed the purchase… Read the rest of this ...

I’ve just moved into a new flat and the combi boiler is showing 0 pressure. I turn on the tap on the filling loop and there seems to be a lot of water entering the system but the pressure is not going up. It just stays on zero. I don’t want to turn on the filling tap too long incase there is a big hole and the guy in the flat downstairs gets very wet. There is no sign of water leaking out of a radiator. So how long does it normally take to repressurise a combi system? Is it a couple of seconds or do I leave the tap on for minutes? Any help would be great. Thanks
